Red light therapy (RLT) is generally safe when used as directed, but there are some potential risks and side effects particularly for children:
- Skin irritation: RLT can cause temporary skin irritation, such as redness or burning
- Eye damage: RLT can damage your eyes if you don’t wear protective goggles
- Tissue damage: If used improperly, RLT can cause tissue damage or burns
- Interactions with medications: RLT may interact with certain medications
- Sensitivity to heat: People with hyperpigmentation or melasma may be sensitive to the heat generated by RLT devices.
- Long-term safety: The long-term safety of RLT devices isn’t yet known
To mitigate risk we would ask that a doctor confirm that RLT is right for your child.
