London Orthotic Consultancy
Founded in 2004 the London Orthotic Consultancy (LOC) is a private clinic that provides bespoke orthotic treatments for a wide range of adult and paediatric conditions. In 2015, we started working with Elaine Owen, the world-renowned physiotherapist, who has developed concepts that have been adopted across the world as the gold standard in lower limb orthotic management of children with neurological conditions like Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida. Together we have built what we call the OSKAR clinic. We believe this is a unique example of orthotics being used to their full potential thereby helping children and their parents achieve the goals they set.
We work with a number of London hospitals including The Portland which is the UK’s largest private hospital for women and children. We provided orthotics for their first Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) patient in 2016 and now provide in patient assessments as requested by the clinical team there.
LOC has state-of-the-art Gait Laboratories at our Kingston, Cambridge and Manchester clinics. These provide precise and detailed measurements of joint angles, muscle activity and ground reaction forces. This helps us identify the source of any problems that affect a person’s mobility; this leads to better prescriptions, allows for fine tuning at the fitting stage and means we can track a patient’s progress objectively.
Our bespoke orthoses are designed to enhance function and mobility, provide structural support and reduce the effects of contractures and deformities as children grow. LOC manufactures the majority of the orthotics it fits itself. We do not have to rely on outside suppliers, so we are able to exercise exacting quality control and minimise lead times.
We understand that children develop their motor patterns and gait characteristics from an early age. Correctly prescribed and well-designed orthoses can play a vital role in aiding this development into later life. We aim to design orthoses and provide adjustments where possible to maximise their durability as a child grows and develops.
