Just4Children are raising funds to continue providing the specialist equipment and rehabilitation work following a life changing operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) for Oscar aged 11 from Manchester.
Simon and Dawn are the parents of a wonderful boy named Oscar. Our son was born prematurely in March 2014, and as a result of complications suffered at birth Oscar now suffers from cerebral palsy. The main ramification of this is him being unable to walk due to extreme muscle tightness in his legs. Following consultations with his specialists, we were told that Oscar was eligible for a potentially life changing operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) which would greatly reduce this muscle tightness and potentially help him lead a more independent life in the future.
Thanks to the generosity of friends, family and the local community Just4Children managed to raise the funds needed for the operation which took place at the wonderful Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool on May 7th 2021. The operation was a success, with the removal of some of the tightness in his legs it has enabled Oscar to be more comfortable in a variety of everyday tasks he is also able to concentrate more at school due to him not being as fatigued due to his body not being as tight.
Oscar has worked so hard since his operation, he has weekly private physio session, he attends an SDR Rehab centre on Wednesday evenings as well as a bi-weekly accessible gym.
He has also started playing for the Manchester City Powerchair development squad training every Thursday evening where he hopes to be able to play in the national league in the future.
As Oscar gets older his needs continue to change meaning we are continually looking at different equipment needed to support Oscar, unfortunately this equipment isn’t always available through the local authority and needs to be funded privately.
We are continuing to raise funds for ongoing physiotherapy, rehabilitation sessions, specialist equipment and specialist sports equipment, while we may in the future begin additional campaigns for home adaptations and wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Thank you for your support.
