Just4Children are fundraising to provide Lucy with an Innowalk which would help her with a range health complications along with giving her the chance to walk.
Lucy is a beautiful young lady aged 13 from Portsmouth. She suffers with Rett syndrome, a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects motor skills, movement, and speech while preserving understanding and cognition.
Born healthy but 17 days late, we were thrilled to welcome a perfect little girl. However, after 18 months, we noticed concerning behaviours, leading to the devastating diagnosis of Rett syndrome.
This condition primarily affects previously healthy girls, resulting in lifelong disabilities and medical challenges. Lucy cannot walk, talk, or use her hands purposefully and faces issues such as severe reflux, scoliosis, and dystonia. She relies upon a feeding tube and copes with various other health challenges. Despite these hurdles, she is a social, funny, loving, and very popular young lady.
Rett syndrome is often described as a “locked-in syndrome,” as there is immense potential within Lucy that we strive to unlock through specialised equipment and therapies. Unfortunately, the NHS does not provide many of the essential life-changing tools that Lucy needs, leaving us to cover the costs ourselves or facing the reality of her missing out.
