Buggsy is one of, if not the youngest stroke survivor in the UK. After leaving his predicted future in the dust, we are now needing to fundraise for Just4Children to help him achieve things we thought were impossible
Buggsy is aged 5 from Nottingham. He is named after our foetal consultant and had a stroke in the womb between 24 and 26 weeks. This stroke wiped his midline brain. We decided at that moment that as long as our boy was going to fight, so were we.
He was born full term at only 3lbs 11 oz. Born with dislocated knees and hips and no ability to swallow. Understandably he needed a lot of reoccurring medical intervention, his heart stopped 104 times in one day and prognosis wasn’t great. Still, we all remained hopeful, as there is no other Buggsy that we could find in the world then there was no ‘path’ that our team could relate too.
We asked to be trained on all the medical care needed with the goal to take him home and give him the best short life we could. 5 months later, we passed all the training and it was the first day our baby boy saw the sky, felt the wind and rain, something he still loves to this day over the sun. My most treasured memory was his ‘coming home’ day over his birthday which we still celebrate.
Fast forward 5 years, yes 5! We have enjoyed many adventures. He has started school, he has had 15 operations including another first, which we were given a 50/50 survival rate, thus paving the way for others. We are now in a position where not only is he thriving but he is trying to communicate and if we can get his muscles stronger, there is a chance he will be able to stand, transfer and even walk, and many other things we never dared hope for.
Consequently, after already committing our savings to the funding of his needed downstairs bedroom, hoist and bathroom, this has brought about costs we didn’t imagine in particular for equipment, both for standing, walking and communicating, the need for intensive physios, in Buggsy’s case, a huge need for water therapy.
Thank you for your support.
