Just4Children wishes to support Esme who has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy which means she has increased muscle tone in her legs which causes muscle stiffness and co-ordination problems. She is unable to stand or walk independently.
Meet Esme. She is a happy funny lively 2-year-old from Swindon who wants to do all the things her big sister does.
Esme was born at 35 weeks and spent some time in SCBU but left after 11 days with no health issues. At around 8 months we noticed she wasn’t hitting her milestones like her big sister had done. Just before Christmas 2016 we were told that Esme has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy which was a devastating shock for us as a family.
We want to help Esme to walk and dance like her big sister. Esme loves music and she wants to do ballet like her big sister. So far, she hasn’t let CP stop her but going forward we know that spasticity affecting Esme’s legs will cause constant pain, shortening of her muscles and bone deformities leaving her in her wheelchair. This isn’t the life Esme was destined for, she wants to walk & we will do all we can to help her.
There is no cure for Cerebral Palsy, but Esme could have a life changing operation know as SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy). SDR is the only surgical procedure that will permanently reduce or eliminate the tightness.
Esme needs access to this life changing surgery, specialist equipment, further therapies and adaptations to both home and garden.
