Partnership with Caudwell Children

National charity, Caudwell Children, has extended its support for a life-changing spinal operation to help children with cerebral palsy by announcing a partnership with Just4Children.

Caudwell Children will provide individual donations of up to £5,000 to families working with Just4Children to help towards the cost of having Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, an innovative operation which has enabled hundreds of disabled children to walk independently for the first time.

Trudi Beswick, Chief Executive at Caudwell Children, said: “We have been supporting children to have the SDR treatment both here and in the U.S for over 5 years and have seen the dramatic difference the procedure can have on their independent mobility.

Caudwell Children has been able to open up a limited fund to support families looking to self-fund the treatment and we are delighted to be working with the team at Just4Children to identify those families who can benefit from this funding.”

“Caudwell Children are making SDR more accessible for those families who don’t meet the NHS commissioning criteria.” said Jacqueline Tapp, Treasurer of Just4Children.

Currently under review by the NHS, SDR has been through a scheme entitled ‘Commissioning through Evaluation’, but funding has now come to an end while the results are evaluated so families wishing to have the treatment on the NHS now have to fund it themselves.

Families fundraising for SDR can apply for up to £5,000 towards the treatment costs which will be paid directly to the hospital undertaking the procedure. The limited fund will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Both charities have been instrumental in supporting families across the country seeking to fund the operation, which can cost up to £30,000, and will actively seek candidates for the new funding over the coming months.
