Kyle’s Wish to Walk

Kyle is 5 from Co Meath in Ireland. He has Cerebral Palsy and can’t stand or walk…yet! Just4Children is fundraising to help Kyle make his very first footprints.

Kyle was born 6 weeks premature. It was established that there was damage to the white matter of his brain known as Periventrcular Leukomalacia (PVL) which causes Cerebral Palsy (CP). The white matter sends nerve impulses that controls motor function. Kyle’s disability affects his legs with increased muscle spasticity (an involuntary contraction causing searing pain). The diagnosis was devastating – he would be wheelchair bound for life.

However, we found out about a surgical procedure that is carried out at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri by an amazing human being, Dr T S Park (known as the Guardian of CP). SDR or Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy is a procedure that selects (Selective) problematic nerves in the spinal cord (Dorsal) and cuts these nerve roots (Rhizotomy) which provides pain relief by reducing the tightness and frees the muscles to act normally.

The fundraising is for Kyle’s SDR surgery and aftercare physio to get those little legs firing for the very first time.

Kyle has a fierce spirit and asks for your support.
