Ivy’s SDR journey
Just4Children are raising funds for Ivy to benefit from physiotherapy and hydrotherapy after her SDR surgery as it will aid her recovery and offer her a fuller, more independent life.
Ivy is aged 10 from St Leonards in East Sussex. She is one of the most determined children imaginable. Nothing stops this girl and being given the chance to have SDR surgery was a life changing opportunity for her. However, there is little availability of physiotherapy with the NHS after she’s home following surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. To maximise the benefits of SDR sustained physio and other specialist therapies are needed. At least 4 sessions a week for the foreseeable future are advised.
Ivy’s SDR surgery had incredible results which she is still having ongoing weekly physio for. However, her left ankle and calve are still a lot tighter than the right so consultants have put her on a waiting list for another surgery called ‘calve lengthening surgery’. This cuts the muscle in the calve to help extend it so she can get that foot flatter and won’t struggle with it so much. And. of course again after the surgery she will require to continue her physio to get the best results from it.
Ivy currently walks with a Kaye Walker but has so much confidence that she walks very short distances unaided but with her condition causing her to walk high on her toes it means her balance isn’t great and she falls after a few steps. SDR surgery will help release the tightness in her legs resulting in her being able to put her feet flat and get a better balance to walk.
Ivy refers to her surgery as ‘magic’ and often says things like ‘when she’s had her magic, she will be able to bounce on the trampoline using her feet’, something many of us take for granted.
Any further donations towards the ongoing costs of her physio is greatly appreciated as we are still unable to get her NHS funded physio so private physio is necessary, thank you so much’
Thank you
