Help Maia be more Independent
Just4Children wants to support Maia who needs intensive therapy to help her body stretch and exercise and improve her wellbeing to lead a more normal life.
I want to tell you about my daughter, Maia. She was born prematurely, at just 32 weeks, along with her twin sister, Sara. Unfortunately, Maia had difficulties as a baby and when she turned one, we received the news that she has cerebral palsy.
This affects her ability to sit, walk, and speak. Now, at eight years old, she still can’t walk and talk like other children her age. It breaks my heart when she tries to tell us something, but we can’t understand her. Even though it’s frustrating for her, she never gives up. She wants to be involved in everything and do everything by herself.
She attends a special needs school and we’ve been taking her to the CPotential Centre for therapy since she was three years old, and she loves it. She’s such a hard worker and always eager to try new things. She has recently started walking without her frame! The CPotential Centre has made a huge difference to her capabilities.
Maia requires a range of therapies including:
Conductive Education: this helps Maia learn to move and interact with her environment more independently. It also focuses on improving her self-esteem and social skills;
Physiotherapy: this helps her learn to walk, sit, and move in ways that are safe and comfortable for her. Physiotherapy also helps her manage any pain or discomfort she may experience because of her condition;
Occupational Therapy: this focuses on things like dressing, eating, and playing. It also helps her develop fine motor skills, such as holding a pencil or using utensils;
Speech and Language Therapy: this focuses on helping her learn to speak more clearly, use correct grammar and vocabulary, and understand others. It also helps her develop alternative communication strategies, such as using an iPad.
As her parents, we are giving Maia the best possible chance at independence and happiness. However, the cost of these ongoing therapies can be prohibitive. This is why we are seeking to raise funds for Just4Children to help offset the expenses associated with Maia’s care at the CPotential Centre. With your help, we can ensure that Maia continues to receive the therapies she needs to reach her full potential and live a happy, fulfilling life.
