Family heartache as Billy spends Christmas in LA hospital

“I would hope that a year from now, we would be preparing for Christmas like the way everybody else is at this time of the year – getting the tree up and thinking about Santa coming.”

Charlotte Caldwell has had a lonely few months and is now facing the prospect of Christmas thousands of miles from home and in a sterile hospital room. The mum from Castlederg has spent the last few months in an American hospital with her seriously ill son Billy.

The 11 year old has a severe form of epilepsy which could kill him without treatment. There’s still no date for Billy’s brain surgery and that means Christmas this year will be spent in LA.

“Billy’s brother Kyle will probably be here with his wife. Maybe some other family members might come out. Hopefully we’ll have some company around the table for Christmas dinner.”

It’s far from an ideal situation, but Charlotte told us she just wants to make sure Billy will be alive for next Christmas.
