Jessica is a very ill 23 year old woman from Cheltenham who needs urgent surgery, testing, and treatment for her multiple complex health conditions, in order to improve her very poor quality of life.
After developing Myalgic Encephalomyelitis 9 years ago, Jessica has continually declined. Year after year her symptoms get worse, meaning that she is less functional, and has a poorer quality of life. She now has Severe ME, and the next step is Very Severe, which means being bedbound and unable to tolerate any light or noise. In 2019, Craniocervical instability (CCI) and atlantoaxial instability (AAI) were possibilities, and testing confirmed that she has them. After a consultation with her neurosurgeon, it has been determined that she needs surgery to correct these issues, and hopefully bring improvement to many of her symptoms. While this surgery will not cure her, it brings an 80% chance of improvement. He also believes that she may have a number of other conditions, which she needs urgent testing for, and further surgery and treatment if she does have them.
Jessica is a hardworking, compassionate, and resilient young woman who despite severe illness from a young age, has dedicated her life to helping others. She has never been well enough to work a paid job, but previously did voluntary work as a helpline volunteer for a charity, an archery coach, a foodbank volunteer, and as a parish councillor, before further decline meant that she is now unable to do any of these things.
Jessica’s life is now very bleak, with an inability to do any of the things that brought her enjoyment, or even manage most basic tasks without help. We urgently need to raise a deposit of around £5k for the first surgery, so that we can get on the waiting list which is 4-6 months long. We then need to raise money for the further tests, the rest of the surgical cost, and potentially further surgeries and treatments. The rough estimate for surgery is £55k, with a further £30k for another likely surgery. We will update with more precise costs and information about further tests when we have them.
