Junaid was born with a heart condition called critical aortic stenosis in February 2011 and is from Burton on Trent in Staffs. He badly seeks more independence.
He underwent 3 open heart surgeries before he was 4 months old and spent his first 10 months of life in Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
On 7th December 2011, his life drastically changed. He unfortunately contracted pneumonia which resulted in a cardiac arrest which lasted 25 minutes. Because of this, he was left with irreversible brain damage and has left him unable to sit or walk and has a weakness on his right side.
He has an nhs wheelchair at the present. The chairs the nhs provide, however, are very heavy and not made for the specific child. Junaid cannot self propel his wheelchair as it is too heavy for him, especially when trying to use his weak hand. He cannot maintain correct posture in his current chair despite alterations being made.
We recently had an assessment for a private funded wheelchair called a Little Wave Clik from Ki Mobility in America. As soon as Junaid sat in this chair, he was able to maintain his posture and self propel!
He finally had independence. Unfortunately, this comes at a price. This chair is made to order and has 100’s of adjustments which would last him for the next few years at least.
Please help my son gain his independence with his mobility. It would mean the world to him to not have to rely on others to push him around and be able to do this for himself.
