Gethin is a paediatric stroke survivor aged 20 months from Derry. As his parents we are amazed at his strength, determination and energy for life. He is such a happy wee boy bringing his family so much joy.
Before Gethin was born doctors picked up an anomaly in his brain during a routine scan. One of the ventricles in his brain was filling with fluid and causing pressure to build up in his brain. He was born at 36 weeks and an MRI scan confirmed that had suffered a type of brain injury called Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) and was sent for brain surgery in the Royal Victoria Hospital at 4 days old.
Thankfully Gethin did not receive surgery and he was discharged to be carefully monitored by the local child development team. Just before his first birthday Gethin was diagnosed with unilateral cerebral palsy which means that he is not crawling or walking yet.
Through research we discovered Advanced Bio-mechanical Rehabilitation. ABR is a unique, rehabilitative, home based therapy that is primarily used to help children with cerebral palsy. It is a gentle, hands-on treatment that brings about predictable recovery of the muscular skeletal structure and motor function.
We recently began this therapy and are currently fund raising for Just4Children to complete this treatment.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for all your support.
